…………this purpose, I decided to excavate the eastern side of the pyramid to see if there were any monuments which would help in settling this matter, and luckily there were found in. the centre of the pyramid, and inside, its stone girdle wall, two stelae (see-PL II). The remains of the base of one of them still exists, but all the upper part was destroyed, and no fragments of it found in the debris; but the other stela was found lying face downwards. The lower part is still in situ, but the rest of the stela, which fell down, was broken into three pieces. The height of the part remaining is 3 in. 80 and its breadth is 1 m. 27. As may be seen from PI. III, it is well preserved, rounded at the top. and bore on its face a decoration in marvellous high relief, showing the falcon standing on a serekh, rectangle. To the right may be read the names of Snefru : " (Horus) Lord of Rightiousness, King of Upper and Lower Egypt, ihe Two Ladies, Lord of Rightiousness, Horus of Gold Snefru". Below the cartouche is a representation of Snefru, wear-be a costume similar to that of the ) Heb-sed and holding a flail in his right band; his head is the double crown. Under the inscription is the usual decoration of the facade of the King's palace.
The discovery of this stele at once solved the problem of the decarated fragments found over and around the two stelae in the Funerary Temple during the last season, and it became obvious that the two bore more or less the same texts, arranged in the same manner.
Between the two stake, a little further Inwards the east, there were found remains of a brick altar (?), but it is rather difficult to say if this is contemporaneous with the stelae or not, and whether it had any con-nectifm wilh them.
The discovery of this stela also put an end to any supposition as to the attribution of this pyramid to any other person, and it is undoubtedly the Кa-pyramid of Snefru himself.
The northern side of the same pyramid, and especially the part in front of the entranse, was re-cleaned, and it was found that one-roomed chapel existed in front of it. In the middle of this room is a built shaft {see Fig. 1), which becomes narrower as it gоеs down. The interior of this pyramid, as well as the chapel, were cleared a few years ago (see above), and we found nothing but drift sand……………
